Overhead lighting is not just a light fitting in the centre of your room. It should be a mix of decorative as well as functional lighting, even concealed lighting.

Handmade lighting using natural materials – metal, stone and glass. Each piece has its own individual differences.Quality lighting has better proportions than cheap high street lighting. A large room deserves a large light fitting.

Quality light fittings generally have better proportions than high street lighting which can look large in the photos, but often puny in reality. A large room with good proportions deserves a light fitting to match. 

Wall lighting

Wall lighting is as much decorative as it is practical. In a room with no ceiling lighting, or perhaps just recessed downlight, wall lights add style and mood to a room. They provide soft and flattering light compared with overhead lighting, so delightful for evenings.

Table lighting and shades

Table lighting is the softest and most flattering form of lighting. It creates ambience in the way that overhead lighting doesn’t. So turn your ceiling lights off in the evening, and light the room with side and floor lamps, to create a cosy space.

Careful consideration of where table lights are manufactured is important. Avoid anything mass produced on the other side of the planet. Perhaps consider transforming the look of an existing table lamp with a new shade.

If you don’t have the luxury of changing the wiring layout, then introducing layers of light with table and floor lamps will help create the right mood and function you need.
